Marin People's Climate Event Calls for Climate Action

Saturday, April 29th, in Washington DC, in Marin, Santa Rosa, Sonoma, in Oakland, and over 370 other locations around the country and the world, citizens stood up en mass as part of the People's Climate Mobilization to assert the reality and severity of the building climate crisis.  In Washington, over 200,000 marched to the White House.  In Marin, between 600-1000 people marched from Kentfield, Fairfax and San Rafael to the San Anselmo Hub. There, they held a demonstration and vigil at the intersection of Sir Francis Drake Blvd. and Center Ave, then rallied and listened to speakers in nearby Creek Park, (see below).  Wherever people gathered, they demanded action on climate change and a rapid transition to a new, just, clean energy economy.

Read more about the Marin event in the Marin Independent Journal HERE. Below, see a clip of activist Erin Schrode, a former Congressional Candidate speaking at Creek Park in San Anselmo.

State Supports Bay Area Pollution Caps

In what may signal a significant shift in the regional political power struggle to put absolute emission caps on Bay Area oil refinery emissions including greenhouse gases, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) has announced it supports a proposal by local environmental groups, including 350Marin and 350 Bay Area, to do just that.  valero-refinery.jpgThis is the proposal that our groups and allies have been pressing to be adopted by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) for many years now, but which has only recently started to gain traction with the BAAQMD Board.

Undoubtedly, actually putting such regulations in place, making sure they're enforced, and keeping them from being undone, will require continuous citizen involvement and pressure on our representatives to counter oil company lobbying and legal threats. However, just as the job remaining shouldn't be underestimated, neither should the potential victory if the Bay Area becomes the first region in California, within the United States, and possibly worldwide, to decisively limit the ability of oil refineries to continuously increase their pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.   Read more details on the policy shift by CARB HERE.

San Luis Obispo Rejects Philips 66 Oil Trains

Last month, the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors rejected an appeal of a rail project at a Phillips 66 petroleum refinery there that could have brought 80-car trains loaded with crude oil through East Bay and South Bay cities.  trains-richmond.jpgThis action by San Luis Obispo continues the powerful alliance and solidarity of environmental groups, citizens and cities up and down the entire west cost of the US that have been consistently rejecting coal shipping from ports and fossil-fuel rail infrastructure expansions.   Read more details HERE.

Trump Orders Completion of DAPL and Keystone

trump-execorder.jpgOn Tuesday, Jan. 24th, President Trump signed an executive order mandating completion of the Dakota Access and Keystone Pipelines.  While it wasn't clear initially whether his order would halt the previously announced environmental review of alternative routes by the Army Corps of Engineers, the agency soon clarified that it would immediately grant a final permit to Energy Transfer Partners to finish the pipeline on the original, protested route.  You can read more details HERE.

US Government Denies Dakota Access Pipeline Permit

On Sunday, December 4, 2016, the Obama administration delivered on a promise President Obama had made to the Standing Rock Sioux and other assembled tribes years ago to respect their rights and be on their side when it really matters.   It came in the form of a statement by the tribe-celebrates.jpgUS Army Corps of Engineers that they would not approve the final permit needed for the Dakota Access Pipeline to be built underneath Lake Oahe, thereby blocking its route near the Standing Rock Reservation. Read more and see video about the decision in the NY Times HERE, or by clicking on the picture.

For now, this was a tremendous victory for the Standing Rock Water Protectors, the US Vets joining them in recent days, and their supporters in the US and around the world.
